How Often Will I Need to Come In? Scheduling, Cost and Video Sessions

Most people meet weekly or every other week. How often sessions happen, what they cost without insurance, how superbills work, and mixing office and video visits.

Three questions come up on almost every first call: how often will I need to come in, what is this going to cost, and can I do some sessions by video? Here are the straight answers.

How often will I need to come in?

Most people meet with me weekly or every other week. As you move toward your goals, we review progress together and adjust the plan and the pace. Some people space sessions out as things settle. Others like keeping a regular time.

Some treatments have a typical length:

  • Cognitive Processing Therapy for PTSD is usually about twelve weekly sessions.
  • ERP for OCD typically runs 12 to 21 sessions, depending on you and your progress.
  • EMDR takes at least four sessions of history, preparation and assessment before the reprocessing work starts. How long it runs after that depends on what we're working on.

Scheduling is flexible too. Some clients keep the same day and time every week. Others change their appointment from week to week. Both work.

Can I mix in-person and video sessions?

Yes. Plenty of people come to my Wooster office most weeks and switch to video when a kid is sick, the roads are bad, or the day is just too full. You don't have to pick one for good. Video sessions are for clients located in Ohio.

Do you take insurance?

No. I'm a private-pay practice, which means you pay for each session directly. Your first appointment is a 90-minute intake at $200, and sessions after that are $145 for 55 to 60 minutes.

That doesn't mean your insurance can't help. Many plans include out-of-network benefits. At the end of each month I give you a superbill, a detailed receipt you can send to your insurance company, and depending on your plan they may pay part of it back. It's worth calling the number on your insurance card and asking two questions: do I have out-of-network mental health benefits, and what is my deductible?

Private pay also means your care isn't tied to an insurance company's approval, and you decide whether to submit anything to your insurer at all.

What if cost is a barrier?

Tell me. A sliding fee scale is available on request, and I keep two scholarship spots at $60 a session, open when one is available and the criteria are met. Under the No Surprises Act, you also have the right to a Good Faith Estimate of what your care will cost. Ask me for one at any time.
